Star Novelty Works Parlor with Rug and Accessories #199-38

Status: Available Price: $375.00
What a fantastic early American Parlor Set No. 52 made by the Star Novelty Works of Cincinnati, Ohio c. 1905-10 era. The complete set includes a lounge, a rocking chair, 2 chairs, a center table and a room divider with mirror, with the addition of a custom made braided rug in matching colors and Gerlach table accessories which include 2 cups and saucers, a pitcher and a candlestick, all matching in their early dark color. The set and the accessories have always been together from an early New England estate, so I am keeping them together selling them as a complete set. This is a rare and hard to find parlor set, especially with all the original pieces together. The seating pieces are all upholstered with chintz fabric with a red background, with beige stars and blue and beige dots and the seat edges have red fringe. Interestingly, the room divider with mirror had been painted red (factory original color) to match the upholstery which is quite unique (the mirror is also original and has a little bit of darkening). The wood portions of the other pieces have been ebonized in color and this is also quite unusual for this parlor set--most I have seen have been a light wood color. The table has nicely curved portions on the sides of the top and in the center column ending with 4 legs. The back of the lounge has beautiful cut deep scroll work which is also seen on the chairs and the room divider...the rocking chair has nicely shaped arms and the front legs of the chairs are beautifully turned. All in wonderful condition, the upholstery is free of stains and there are no breaks or repairs. The braided rug is hand made from silk and the colors match the furniture beautifully. It is all what is referred to as a large 1" scale--meaning it is slightly larger than what we call today 1" scale, but was in practice during this early era as early dollhouse furniture was not as strict in exact scale and that was the charm of early dollhouses. The lounge is 3 1/2" high at highest point and 5 3/4" long. The chairs are 4 1/4" high at highest point. The room divider is 6 1/4" high at highest point and 3 7/8" wide. This set would be great for an early dollhouse and is very hard to find. There is an example of this early set pictured in Faith Eaton's book, "The Ultimate Dolls' House Book" on pages 42 and 46 in The Tiffany-Platt House which belonged to Flora Gill Jacobs.
