Gerhard Sohlke Sewing Machine SOLD

Status: Sold
Description:
What a rare and wonderful early piece made in Germany by the Gerhard Sohlke company 1875-80 era. The Sohlke company had a unique way of combining different materials to achieve certain affects, such as wood graining and metal work. This particular piece is made from pewter on the legs and cross bracing in a splendid heart-shaped design on the sides with swirls and fleur-de-lis. The center portion with drawer is made from early mache and hand finished in a splendid wood grain. The top is tin also finished with hand painted wood grain. The tin sewing machine is attached to this wood grain top. It is black enameled and decorated with gold designs. There are numerous pictures shown to illustrate the beauty of this piece from all sides, including the back which has an original very old label, most likely a price label attached during the time it was first sold. Beautifully executed with so much detailing. This is a larger scale, closer to 1 1/4" scale. Approximately 4 1/2" tall and 3 1/2" wide. This piece does show some wear but it is very early and extremely hard to find. All pieces by Gerhard Sohlke are very desirable because of their splendid workmanship. See Liza Antrim's book,"Family & Friends' Dolls' Houses" for a complete write-up of the Sohlke Company and she illustrates many of their wonderful products.
