Description:
I have had numerous versions of "Children Teasing the Sleeping Mother, but by far I believe this particular model is the best. This porcelain piece is glazed like the china dolls--the ones I have had in the past were of matte bisque. The wonderful trinket box depicts 2 children, a boy on top of a table with a girl directly next to him standing on a stool behind the table who are teasing their mother who is unknowingly sound asleep with her hands in her lap sitting in her chair. They look to be pulling a thread from her clothing which is created from a long, thin strip of separately applied porcelain, a very difficult process considering this was produced during the early days of pressed bisque in lieu of the later poured bisque process. Very elaborately decorated, the mother's skirt has a colorful floral design whereas the table cloth next to her exhibits a different floral design. The little girl's skirt has green & black polka dots and she wears a cinch-waisted dark blue jacket. The children's dark hair & facial features are very finely executed. Very colorful with beautiful hues of blues, purple, green, orange, ochre and accented by gold....this is a very special trinket box. The underneath portion of the box is lined so that it also can be used as a match strike. Great condition with no breaks or repairs. Nice larger size at 4 3/4" high x 4" wide. Very early pressed bisque c. 1860-65 made in Germany and marked with incised numbers underneath.
